What is Restorative Mediation?

Restorative mediation brings people who are in conflict into communication in order to repair harm by giving them a voice in a safe environment.

With a restorative mediation intervention there is no identified victim and offender relationship. In this way restorative interventions can be used anywhere to prevent conflict, build relationships and repair harm by enabling people to communicate effectively and positively.

Restorative Mediation is an intervention that:-

  • Brings together people who are involved in ongoing conflict which is causing harm
  • Creates a supported environment where participants find and own their own solutions after sharing the impact of the conflict
  • Aims to increase understanding and therefore tolerance between participants
  • Requires participants to take personal responsibility for outcomes
  • Focusses on solutions and the future.

Restorative Mediation is NOT:-

  • Soft arbitration
  • Legally binding
  • A means to resolve a legal dispute

Restorative Mediation aims to engage participants in direct communication as this is considered more impactive, but other forms of restorative practice may be available

Mediation short case study

This case was referred to RJ HIOW by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police after reports of ongoing conflict and complaints to police between neighbours which had been on-going for some years. In separate meetings, Mediators explored with both parties a variety of issues which had impacted on everyone's quality of life including disagreement about boundary fences, parking and a breakdown in communication.

The parties agreed to meet which allowed them the opportunity to address the misunderstandings that had developed over time in a facilitated way. Practical solutions were discussed to improve day‑to‑day living, and Neighbour A was able to express the emotional pain she had experienced throughout the conflict. Neighbour B admitted that she was frightened of Neighbour A and experienced her behaviour as aggressive and confrontational. Toward the end of the session, there was a focus on taking small steps, with Neighbour B saying, “I think we should just try and see the best in each other.”

In follow up meetings both neighbours have said they are now able to live alongside one another with significantly reduced stress.

What People Say About Restorative Justice

The facilitators have been wonderful. I feel stronger than I did. I would really recommend Restorative Justice.

Debbie, victim

I hope that she would understand that I know what I’ve done was wrong and I’ve learnt from my actions.

Ryan, offender

I had my opportunity to discuss the incident and also to meet the offender in person.

Leighton, victim

To anyone considering restorative justice – I want you to know that it isn't about forgiving the unforgivable, and there was never any expectation of me to forgive. Sometimes, that simply isn't possible. For me, it was about facing the truth, taking back my voice, and finding a way to move forward without fear.

Kimberley, victim

It brought the feeling close as to how it would be as a victim of such a crime and I began to understand the emotional impact the feeling of betrayal had on the victim.

Offender

I still can't believe how much it helped and made us both feel lighter, we hadn't realised how much we needed to be able to say it out loud.

Harmed person's supporter

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your time, care and compassion, it has meant so much to us both and made an awful moment in our lives easier to cope and deal with.

Harmed person's supporter

I am pleased I did it, it feels like the offender has done his bit, apologised and we can now all draw a line under it. Everybody needs to be onboard and want to do it, if that occurs then the RJ process can work really well.

Victim

I think the conversations we have had have definitely helped me and allowed me to be heard.

Victim

What many people don't realise is how protective and carefully planned the process is. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is left to chance. Victims are protected every step of the way.

Victim

I went back to my cell and felt as if a massive weight was lifted off my shoulders.

Offender

I have learned a lot and I now know that there is a always hope and a chance to do things better. I am very pleased to have completed the RJ process.
